We, the Cambridge Residents for Responsible Elections (CRRE), believe the City of Cambridge should enact a program that allows candidates for City Council and School Committee to choose to publicly fund all or a portion of their campaigns.
There are many goals for a publicly funded elections program, but some are:
- Leveling the playing field for candidates from financially insecure communities.
- Allowing elected officials to represent Cambridge residents without accepting donations from businesses that have interests before the council.
Corporate interests already have the capacity to spend their money in support of candidates, but we think there’s just too much corporate and special-interest money in the system. Public financing can change that.
